Susie Berry SE Region Trustee.
We were pleased to welcome Susie Berry, the SE Region Representative and Trust Board member. Susie spoke to us after the AGM midday, about the Fit For the Future initiative to set up a Council to handle u3a matters at Trust level, about the new emphasis on recruiting members and on encouraging and supporting new u3as, and on the role of Networks . She admired the Kent Network for its strong activity level and initiatives.
After the Welcome and Introduction by Chrys Short, Jenny Akehurst started the meeting with and Icebreaker and invited all the 6 tables of attendees to list the best ideas for Welcoming New Members. You will find links to a number of presentations Here
John Russell spoke about 'Attracting New Members to the Committee’.
Jenny Carney, who is a registered nurse, also gave a fascinating talk about how she and two others had set up a Monthly Welfare Presentation table at Paddock Wood U3a's monthly meetings and had met great success. To the extent that she has advised a further 7 U3As on how to set one up.
A key message throughout the day was that the first principle of the U3A movement is 'For the members, By the members ' Similarly, Alan Scott of Gravesend reiterated this in his presentation: 'u3a are caring but not carers '
Conclusions
Afterwards, attendees at the Study Day declared that they had learned a lot and had many ideas to take back to their u3as. Thanks we're given to the many volunteers who had worked hard to make the day a success
